The Dream of the Fathers
Michael Williamson
Experience Publishing, Las Vegas, NV, $21.95 USD, hardcover (240p)
ISBN: 0-9778729-0-4

Leading presidential candidate Senator Steven Hildago is poised to take the presidency in the 2180 election. In just two short years, he and the Americans of Mexican and Latin Traditions Party are convinced that they can wrest control of the White House from corrupt President George Alexander King III. In a country where politics has degenerated into an entrenched fight based largely on race and ethnicity, Hildago seems to be a candidate that can return the government to the people. That is, until he is assassinated in front of thousands of people at his own campaign rally.

Now, with their carefully orchestrated plans in ruins, the leaders of AMOLATT must unveil their secret weapon: a man who can trace his lineage all the way back to famed freedom fighter Che Guevera. Faced with a president who will stop at nothing to maintain his stranglehold on the country, Ernesto Guevera and his compatriots embark on a form of guerilla politics—using cutting-edge technology to protect themselves from the president’s assassins while electrifying the populace.

Williamson has written a crackling fun thriller, loaded with conspiracies, romance, and glimpses at a frighteningly possible future. With its ripping pace and engaging, though somewhat scary, lead character, The Dream of the Fathers is sort of a Black Ops view of future politics—one in which the Constitution is barely hanging on, politicians use miniscule bugs to spy on their competition, and the dirty campaigning can include not just mud smearing but murder. Despite its futuristic setting, The Dreams of the Fathers resonates in today’s environment. In this future world where ethnicity has become THE wedge issue to control the election, we see the results of the hate-mongering politics all too common today.

A fabulously twisty futuristic thriller, The Dream of the Fathers is an intriguing read that is nearly tailor-made for a movie adaptation. Oddly enough, it seems to have been written at least in part as a marketing vehicle for Lieph Manufacturing’s Phexmatic timekeepers. Based on the idea of “natural time,” the Phexmatic system substitutes a biological marker for the “second” of standard time, which means that each person essentially creates his own time system through his physical experience. The Phexmatic system is a relatively small plot point and does nothing to detract from enjoyment of the story. Those who want to learn more about the system will get a more comprehensive view from the company’s Web site at www.experioninst.com.

The Fiction Shelf

The Dream of the Fathers is a "future history"  novel set in America in 2178, only two years away from the nation's eighty-fourth presidential elcetion. Ethnicity has become a wedge issue dividing America, due to its fast-growing Hespanic population and increasing struggles that heve lead to strife. The Dream of the Fathers chronicles Senator Steven Hidalgo's quest to win the presidency and claim control of the White House from corrupt President George Alexander King III. But when Hidalgo is cruelly murdered, a surprising replacement candidate steps forward.

A suspenseful saga filled cover to cover with crisscrossing Machiavellian motives, The Dream of the Fathers is a politically charged read. Highly Recommended.  Five Stars.

Review:
Not being interested in science fiction I was reluctant to read this book, however, the political story intrigued my curiosity. I read The Dream of the Fathers in one sitting and have to admit that I enjoyed this political science fiction novel. Although, this is a work of fiction I could not help but think about the changing demographics and the possibilities that lie ahead for our country. Great read!
